The birth of a legend

Chanel's story begins in 1883, with the birth of Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, better known as Coco Chanel. It is as though she was born with a pattern in her hand. From a very young age Chanel had already learned to sew but little did the world know what was yet to come!

Chanel's early years

It was in 1910 that Chanel launched her first millinery shop in Paris under the name "Chanel Modes" and it was here that she first attracted the attention of Parisian society. While she did quite well with her eye-catching hat designs, it wasn’t until she began designing clothing that her creative genius was first revealed.

At a time when corsets and frills dominated women's apparel, Chanel began producing simple, comfortable designs. Her early collections included jersey clothing, a fabric previously associated with men's undergarments. This was a ground-breaking approach that appealed to modern women seeking comfort and utility in their clothing.

The women's fashion revolution

Throughout the 1920s Chanel continued to defy fashion conventions by presenting designs that have since become timeless classics. It was in an issue of Vogue magazine in 1926 that the "Little Black Dress" debuted. This was a simple yet elegant piece that stood in stark contrast with the elaborate evening dress of the time. It was dubbed "Chanel's Ford" by the magazine, comparing its versatility and general appeal to the popular Model T Ford car.

The Chanel Suit, introduced in 1925, was one of Chanel's most innovative inventions. The design featured a collarless jacket and a well-fitted skirt, providing a comfortable and sophisticated look. It revolutionised women's work clothing and is still a mainstay in many women's wardrobes today.

Going beyond fashion

Chanel expanded her fashion empire beyond apparel, establishing herself as a multifaceted brand. Her now infamous Chanel No. 5 perfume was introduced in 1921, marking the brand's breakthrough into the perfume industry. Chanel No. 5, created by perfumer Ernest Beaux, was the first perfume to bear the designer's name. It rapidly became a global sensation, encapsulating the brand's luxury and inventive character. In 1952 when Marylin Monroe was asked in an interview what she wears in bed, her reply was,“I only wear Chanel no.5. I don’t want to say nude, but it’s the truth”

Chanel's post-Coco era

Coco Chanel died in 1971, yet her legacy and her brand lives on. Karl Lagerfeld became the brand's creative director in 1983, a position he held until his death in 2019. Lagerfeld's tenure at Chanel was characterised by a harmonious blend of respect for Chanel's history and a desire for modernity. He successfully incorporated Coco’s distinctive features into his creations, such as tweed jackets, pearl accessories, and two-tone shoes, while infusing them with a contemporary edge. Also under Lagerfeld, Chanel forayed into the worlds of haute jewellery and timepieces showcasing the brand's commitment to innovation and perfection. Under his supervision, the brand's fashion shows became huge spectacles, significantly increasing Chanel's global appeal.

The legacy of Coco Chanel today

Chanel remains a pillar of luxury and elegance today. The brand is a huge global phenomenon maintaining its reputation for innovation coupled with timeless beauty. The company continues to fascinate the fashion world with its stunning designs, superb craftsmanship, and dedication to maintaining Coco Chanel's legacy.

Each piece retains the unmistakable imprint of Coco's vision, whether it's a classic flap bag, a bottle of Chanel No. 5, or a stylish Chanel suit; all testament to the brand's powerful history. Under the direction of Virginie Viard, Chanel's current creative director, the brand continues to represent the strength, refinement, and elegance of women, exactly as Coco intended.

Chanel's reputation spans time and trends, from its humble beginnings to its current position as a worldwide luxury powerhouse. It is a brand rooted in history and invention, a symbol of eternal elegance, and a monument to the power of visionary leadership and unwavering inventiveness. Here's to Chanel's enduring legacy, may it continue to inspire and delight future generations.

Inspiration and influence

There are many ways a fledgling fashion designer can draw inspiration from such a rich legacy. Here are just a few:

Embrace simplicity and elegance

Chanel transformed women's fashion by emphasising simplicity and comfort without sacrificing elegance.  Starting out as a new fashion designer, you can benefit from this method focusing on designing clothing that perfectly prioritises comfort and style. The "Little Black Dress," is a great example of how a simple, well-executed idea can have a big impact.

Breaking the norms

Coco Chanel was a rule-breaker who dared to deviate from the fashion rules of the day. She put women in trousers during a time when skirts and dresses were the norm and she used casual fabrics such as jersey in high fashion. These may not seem particularly daring today but without Coco Chanel, who knows if women would have ever escaped the fuss and frills of the time.  As a new designer, don't be hesitant to question established fashion boundaries. Go wild with your imagination. Reinvent and innovate!

Branding and personality

Chanel's double-C logo is a globally recognised logo and many features of Chanel's design, such as quilted leather, tweed textiles, the colour black, pearls, and chain straps, have become signature markings. These emphasise the significance of developing a distinctive brand identity and maintaining design consistency. As you embark on your fashion line, begin with creating your own distinct style. You too want to be instantly recognisable.

Expanding horizons

Chanel was more than simply a clothes company; Coco Chanel dabbled in perfumes, accessories and jewellery. She realised that in order to develop a comprehensive brand, she needed to touch on all facets of her clients' lives. As an aspiring designer, consider your options outside apparel. How can your brand influence other areas of your customers' lives?

Legacy and prosperity

Chanel's success did not come easily. It took years of hard work, perseverance, and resilience. Chanel's experience teaches young designers that creating a long-lasting brand takes time, dedication, and persistent effort. Create with the future in mind, and strive to leave a legacy.

Remember, the goal is not to imitate Chanel's style, but to learn from her ethos, her attitude toward fashion, branding brilliance, and unwavering dedication to her art. Take these principles, apply them to your work, and make your own way in the world of fashion.
